Abstract

The European Strategy for Particle Physics is the result of a scientific deliberation process defining the future of this scientific area in Europe. In the first two iterations in 2006 and 2013, the European Strategy focused primarily on the exploration of physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Now, with the scientific program at the LHC in full swing, it's time to set the stage for particle physics beyond the LHC.

The update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics started in September 2018, when the CERN Council appointed the European Strategy Group (ESG) to coordinate the process. By the end of 2018, the particle physics community had submitted 160 contributions, covering future perspectives on particle physics and developments in related areas. In May 2019, the community met and discussed the merits and challenges of the proposals presented at an open symposium in Granada, Spain. These proposals and the studies carried out under the ESG were summarized in the Physics Briefing Book, a 250-page document published in September 2019 that served as the basis of the discussions that followed.

In January 2020, during a week of intense deliberation in the city of Bad Honnef, Germany, the ESG prepared the final scientific recommendations, proposing a vision for the future of particle physics in Europe in the short and long term. The update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics was finally adopted by the CERN Council on 19 June 2020.

In this communication, we present a summary of the European Strategy for Particle Physics.
