Abstract
As the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) approaches its first data taking,
the future of fundamental research is being threatened by an
extraordinary campaign of lies and misinformation, triggered by claims
that the LHC could create new particles or forms of matter capable of
destroying life on Earth. In this presentation, we review the
overwhelming scientific evidence that such claims have no basis of
truth, and discuss the lessons that the scientific community should
draw from this dispute.
