**Abstract**
`
In the standard model exists a very subtle interplay between the Brout-Englert-Higgs effect, gauge invariance, and the structure of the theory which creates a physical spectrum predictable by perturbation theory. In general, a perturbative prediction can fail even at weak coupling beyond the standard model. This has been confirmed in lattice simulations.
The background of this failure is rooted in the field theory of Brout-Englert-Higgs physics, and will be presented together with results from lattice simulations supporting the underlying mechanisms. The implications for various types of BSM models will finally be discussed.`
