Abstract

Several theoretical and experimental problems require that the Standard Model of particle physics is extended. The fact that three generations of quarks and leptons exist is not understood, but it does not belong to this list of problems. The fermion masses and mixings show, however, apparent regularities and hierarchies which suggest that it could be related to and understood by new physics. The talk will cover some existing ideas how the flavour structures might emerge and it will cover recent work which maps the structures onto new parameters which may be easier to explain.
